In a dramatic twist straight out of a crypto thriller, an ancient Bitcoin address has resurfaced after lying dormant for over 13.5 years. Over the weekend, this nearly forgotten wallet moved 64.59 BTC, which had been sitting untouched since February 2011. Back then, Bitcoin was worth a mere $0.998, meaning the entire stash was valued at just $64.46. Fast forward to today, and that same batch of Bitcoin is worth a jaw-dropping $4.142 million—a staggering increase of more than 6,426,000%.
This extraordinary movement caught the attention of the crypto community and trackers like BitInfoCharts. The wallet had received small amounts of Bitcoin sporadically over the years, likely due to dusting attacks. Dusting attacks are malicious attempts by hackers to send tiny amounts of cryptocurrency to numerous wallets in order to break privacy and trace activities.
Interestingly, this is not the only old wallet stirring up excitement. Recently, another long-dormant wallet moved 25 BTC, valued at $1.597 million, after 11 years of inactivity. When it was last active in 2013, the same amount of Bitcoin was worth just $3,098.68. Additionally, another wallet transferred 25 BTC on Monday after a 11.5-year hiatus, with its value soaring from $664 in 2013 to its current worth.
These resurrections of ancient wallets often spark speculation about Bitcoin’s enigmatic creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Blockchain analysts estimate Nakamoto mined one million BTC, starting with the initial 50 BTC reward for the genesis block in January 2009. Nakamoto’s known involvement ended around mid-2011.
The last confirmed sighting of Satoshi was in December 2010 on the BitcoinTalk forum, discussing a Bitcoin software update. The mysterious moves of these old wallets continue to fuel curiosity and excitement in the crypto world, making headlines and igniting discussions about the origins and future of Bitcoin.
